Without the slowdown, the arcade version of 3 kicked my butt and had extra baddies like those sand lion guys oh my! Squadron were even more innovative with bringing good experiences to console.īeing that I was obsessed with Gradius, teenage years saw me buying an import of the PS2 ports for 3 & 4. I would later discover that other ports like U.N. Mechanically this early SNES port taught me the value of player choice that I still search for today in modern shmups and games in general. That thumping soundtrack driving you forward toward the next boss fight that could end you in a microsecond. The "epic slowdown" when the screen filled up with bubbles -) The lone pilot on an endless space adventure, completely outnumbered. My kid brain exploded into imagination when Gradius 3 got going. What shmup hooked you, and never let you go? It felt incredible and I've been seeking out good shmups ever since. Konami's US port of Gradius 3 for SNES was made for me.Īt least that's how my ten year old brain felt playing it for the first time.
